ARTIST'S STATEMENT

The work is in oil, acrylic, and watercolor. My intention is to be as true as possible to the scale and impact of the environment, landform, or landscape I have found interesting enough to spend time with. The challenge is to present a two dimensional representation of a three or more dimensional space that inspires in me a feeling of awe. Seeing infinite space can take our breath away. We may have different religions, politics, and life styles but can agree on this. a feeling of relief that the world is a bigger place than we thought. I think art can heal suffering by reminding us of this space.

I have chosen to not employ the photo negative directly as in past works, but carry the camera with me for color references to use the in the studio. I carry the canvas or watercolor paper to the site and finish the drawing. This process takes one to five days and allows me to enter and be with the view. I also collect found objects and rubbings, which may be used in the piece. In some cases the watercolor is completed on the site but more often than not the weather changes and I am banished from the garden. Then the painting process moves to the studio.

Some people have inquired why I sign and date the paintings on the back. I have come to the view that the signature is a distraction to the illusion the painting is presenting. As Georgia O'Keefe said, "Why would I sign my face?"
